Fruit Jams
Fruit jams are a delicious and versatile way to preserve the flavors of summer. They can be used on toast, biscuits, or even as a glaze for chicken or pork. Making your own jam is also a great way to save money and reduce food waste.
Here is a recipe for plum, muscadine jam, or your favorite fruit:
Ingredients:
- 1000 g of your favorite fruit, pitted and chopped
- 500-600 g of sugar
- 50-60 g of lemon juice
Instructions:
In a large pot, combine the fruit, sugar, and lemon juice.
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly.
Once the mixture is boiling, lower the temperature and reduce for 15-20 mins.
Remove the pot from the heat and let it cool for 10 minutes.
Pour the jam into clean jars and seal them tightly.
Store the jam in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.
Tips:
For a smoother jam, remove the plums and muscadine grapes from the pot and puree them in a blender or food processor before adding them back to the pot.
To test if your jam is ready, place a small amount on a cold plate. If the jam wrinkles when you push it with your finger, it is ready.
If you want to make a flavored jam, add 1 teaspoon of your favorite extract or spice to the pot along with the pectin.
For a thicker jam, cook it for a few minutes longer.
To prevent the jam from crystallizing, add 1/2 teaspoon of cream of tartar to the pot.
